Studio 34
Esscee / aka Sadaf Chezari Esscee's work is about the alchemy of transformation and identity. They first started to work with hair at the age of 14 as a junior. They trained as a hairstylist in Crown Hairdressing leaving to study Photography at London College of Communication (UAL). Their practice is concerned with migrant and queer identity. In 2020, they began cutting hair in their artist studio as a way of offering a safe space to have a haircut post lockdown as an alternative space to the salon environment. This was under the name 606_cuts. The success of this led them to Studio 34, a space initially dedicated to cutting hair. Over the last year, Studio 34 has organically become a project space connecting with the queer community in Newcastle. The studio welcomes all people; offering a safe space for experimenting freely. Esscee takes portraits of all the colourful beings that come to the studio as an ongoing photo series creating an archive of community. They are particularly keen to collaborate with local creatives using the space to invent new / experimental works within their space.
